About Tracy Kearley, the Creative Director at uandi design ltd

"After leaving school I started working at a screen printing company, printing clothing badges, which I enjoyed but there was something missing, I was very interested in the artwork department and learning the whole process but unfortunately there was not a vacancy and this made me realise I wanted more so I decided to apply for art college, and within the space of 2 weeks I had submitted my application, left my job, been interviewed for the college place, moved to Hereford and started the course, it was all very quick and exciting. My design journey had started...
I studied Visual Communications for 3 years at Herefordshire College of Art & Design and obtained a 1st Diploma and National Diploma.
After completing college I worked in a children's play centre for a while as it was hard to find a job in the design industry.
Finally I found a job and my first design related role was working for a label company creating artwork for stickers and labels which was a great start in the design world. I then had the opportunity to be part of a new business venture in Somerset, however this wasn't in the design industry and it was a children's play centre but I would be an integral part of the set up and manage the play centre alongside the directors I thought this would be a great challenge and I found myself moving to Taunton!
This job was very full on and I learnt a lot about running a business and managing staff and I spent a number of years doing this and was promoted to Operations Manager, but there was a lot of pressure and responsibility involved and I really missed being creative.
I then got a job in a copy shop in Taunton, this was a great job and I learnt a lot about the design and print industry from photocopying, design and creating artwork through to print finishing but there was still something missing.
I then started working for an exhibition/events company and I was responsible for all their in house design and buying print etc, this was a huge learning curve and I can remember on my first day sitting at my desk and thinking 'how am I going to do this!' but I soon settled in and over the years as the company grew I grew with it and became the design manager with a small team of designers to oversee.
Whilst working I went back to college to refresh my design skills and attended SCAT (now Somerset College) every saturday for 2 years and obtained a HNC in Graphic Design.
Throughout my time with the exhibition/events company I learnt a lot about design in different mediums, dealing with staff and business in general. The company then started going through some changes and felt it was time for me to think about moving forward.
I felt this was the right time for me to become self employed, so in January 2005 I took the plunge! Since then it has been all go and I have not looked back, it has been a lot of hard work but very rewarding, my business has continued to develop over the years becoming a Limited company in 2011. I get great satisfaction out of running my business and I really enjoy working with clients to achieve their objectives and becoming the creative part of their extended team."
